Understanding the Church of God Story—Background, Heritage & Future compiled by Sieg Pudel
How is the church built and protected?
…upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. (Matthew 16:18 NLT)
The deep heartbeat of Christ
[Jesus prayed:] My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. (John 17:20)
My journey around the world taught me that the Christian church is made to take on different shapes and forms. Its leaders all have limitations, and each culture both strengthens the church and weakens it. God seems to allow this. He designed it this way. And a part of us resents that he uses what we don’t like or understand. It would have been more comfortable for Peter if the church had adhered to the older understandings, but Paul makes it clear that this movement is growing and must become more inclusive….
I am convinced with the notion that the passion for holiness and unity that permeated the early decades of our history can re-emerge as a dramatic statement to post-modern culture. We can be a renewed movement and a compelling alternative in the market place of diverse denominational and cultural choices.
The Historical Society of the Church of God (Anderson) exists to encourage the collection and preservation of artifacts and documents relating to the history of the Church of God; to encourage historical research
and writing of Church of God history; and to provide a forum for like-minded people interested in participating in and furthering the study of Church of God history.
Our official Church of God publication was called The Gospel Trumpet (1881 – 1961), and then was renamed Vital Christianity in 1961. These Christ-focused magazine-papers were a huge spiritual and social influence around North America, as well as around the world; a blessing and ministry tool of the Church of God for 116 years before Vital Christianity ceased its publication in 1996. After many requests, dialogues, conversations and research, a renewed attempt was made to have a common publication again from 2004 to 2007, which became known as ONEVoice! Unfortunately it wasn’t able to continue to “survive.”
Our present communications are quite diverse: CHOGnews, monthly e-newsletter; Communiontogether—Inspiring and Equipping Leadership for Transformative Ministry, published bi-monthly; The Messenger (Church of God in Eastern Canada quarterly magazine/paper, now also www.the-messenger.org); The Gospel Contact (Church of God in Western Canada monthly newsletter); monthly Multiplication Moments e-letter; People to People, published bi-monthly by CBH (Christians Broadcasting Hope); Church of God Peace Fellowship (quarterly) Newsletter, QARA Newsletter (Vocational Advocacy and Support for Women in Ministry); YMI (Youth Ministry Informer), a regular newsletter sent to the head youth leader at each Church of God congregation in North America; Connection Newsletter, published semi-annually by Christian Women Connection.
There probably are many more regional or national publications and newsletters throughout the church body.
